1,040 lb. pumpkin wins prize in Clarence competition
CLARENCE, N.Y. (AP) - How do you grow a giant pumpkin? Mike Matto says it took "a lot of water" to grow his 1,040-pound orange gourd.
The Bradford, Pa., man's pumpkin won the $1,000 first prize in Saturday's World Pumpkin Confederation Weigh-Off held in the upstate New York town of Clarence, which is just outside Buffalo.
He faced stiff competition, including from 9-year-old J.C. Hohensee.
The boy says he sang and talked to his 623-pound pumpkin to get it to grow.
He also advised anyone looking to grow their own gourd that hitting a pumpkin will stop it from growing.
He took home $300 for his entry.
