NY group to release school bus project results

WHEC-TVA New York transportation group is releasing the results of a pilot project that used digital license plate readers to apprehend drivers who passed school buses illegally.

The New York Association for Pupil Transportation is releasing the information during a Thursday morning news conference at a suburban Albany school. Joining the school bus industry group will be officials from the state Department of Motor Vehicles and the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee.

Earlier this year the NYAPT installed digital license plate readers on school buses in three school districts: Canandaigua, Bethlehem (outside Albany) and
Brewster (north of New York City).

Officials say motorists pass stopped school buses at least 50,000 times each day in New York state.
