A construction worker was trapped in a utility ditch in Canandaigua today. He was working in a trench, when all of a sudden a wall of dirt and soil collapsed on his head. It took a lot of digging and manpower to get him out.

The fire chief says there were half a dozen rescuers down there trying to rescue Cory Rogers from the trench. He said it took about an hour and 20 minutes to complete the job.

The fire chief says the victim’s coworkers called 911 around noon. During the call they said the man was trapped in soil. When they got here the victim was stuck in soil from the waist down. The chief says getting someone unstuck is a very difficult process.

The chief then called other departments to assist in the trench rescue. They even called the Rochester Fire Department. The victim was in the trench and the soil toppled down on him. The victim was conscious throughout the entire operation and was then Mercy Flighted to Strong Hospital.

Canandaigua Firefighter George Smith said, “He was a good patient. He obviously wanted to get out of the hole. We worked with him as far as telling him what we needed him to do and explain to him how things were going to go and protected him as best we could as we extracted him from the hole.”

The fire chief says this is his second time in his whole career, which has been 15 years, that he's been called to a trench rescue. That's how infrequently this happens.

Rogers is still in the emergency department at Strong Hospital.
