The latest information into our newsroom reports at least 12 people were killed , and 31 wounded in two shootings at the Fort Hood Army base in Texas.
Lt. Gen Bob Cone said at a news conference that one suspected shooter, who has been identified as Major Malik Nadal Hasan, has been killed and two other suspects were apprehended, but have since been released on Thursday.
The shooter has been identified as Major Malik Nadal Hasan, who was an army mental health professional. Military officials say Hasan was a psychiatrist at Walter Reed Medical Center for six years before being transferred to the Texas base in July.
The NY Times is reporting that Hasan was upset about being deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan.
The shooting began around 1:30 p.m. Cone says that all the casualties took place at the base's Soldier Readiness Center where soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning undergo medical screening.
He says the shooter used two handguns in the attack.
