She escaped by running down Route 96 and flagged down drivers for help, all while her attacker was still chasing her. "It clearly was the intent of this man to take the life of this woman," Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero said. Fifty-eight-year-old Robert Collins of Farmington is charged with first-degree attempted murder. Deputies say he worked with the victim at a company in Ontario County, but they are not releasing the victim's name or the name of that company. Collins is being held in Ontario County Jail without bail. Sheriff Povero says Collins was waiting at the woman's house in Victor on Thursday night. When she got home just before 7:00 p.m., he came up to her and tried to hide his face with a cardboard box. They talked for only a few moments before he started hitting her on the head with the handle of a garden tool. The sheriff said the woman fought back, hitting and kicking Collins before running from her house and onto Route 96. Collins was following her towards Farmington. She was bleeding from the head and he still had the weapon. Two cars pulled over to help and one of the drivers let the woman inside the car for safety. Collins ran away while they called 911. The woman was taken to Thompson Hospital, where she was treated and released. Police later arrested Collins at his home. Povero says several cars drove by while Collins was chasing her. The sheriff is asking anyone who saw it to call investigators at 585-396-4638. Investigators believe Collins had been stalking the woman for up to two months. Despite working at the same company, Collins and the woman had no friendship or relationship. Collins is due back in court on November 19th. |
