Three little-known Republicans are facing off in what is expected to be a low-turnout primary election to take on Democrat Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in November.

Attorney Wendy Long, Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos and U.S. Rep. Bob Turner each have been trying to energize Republicans in the run-up to the primary Tuesday. This year's primary date has moved up from its traditional slot in September, raising concerns that fewer voters will take notice.

The three candidates have little statewide name recognition. Polls show Gillibrand, a three-year incumbent with more than $9 million in campaign cash, holding wide leads over her potential challengers.
