She's a proud 10th Warder. She grew up on Seneca Parkway and knew very early on she wanted to join the Rochester Police Department.

It's been 17 years now since Rochester Police Investigator Terry Dearcop first put on the badge. She's just as excited now as she was back then.

Investigator Terry Dearcop knows the streets of the 10th Ward well. The 17-year veteran grew up in the 10th Ward, but things have changed over the years. Now working out of major crimes and the child abuse unit, she can't help but bring her memories with her on the job.

Investigator Terry Dearcop said, “I walked to school every day of my life down these streets, never took a school bus. It makes me sad to see the violence on Dewey Avenue and right around my neighborhood, but I have hope that it will get better. I want every kid in the city of Rochester to have the childhood I had. Being able to walk to the corner store, swimming in the neighborhood recreation pool, doing all those things where you feel safe.”

As a child, Investigator Dearcop says she knew early on this was what she wanted to do.

News10NBC's Janet Lomax said, “So second grade, you had a police officer come in and speak to you and your classmates and you decided then and there you wanted to become a police officer?”

Investigator Dearcop said, “That day I came home from school and told my mom and dad that a police officer from the Rochester Police Department came in and I was going to be an Rochester Police Department officer someday and I never changed my mind.”

She's worked patrol and vice. She's spent time on the eastside and the westside. She met her husband on the job. Now they have two children. No, she says, she wouldn't change a thing.

Investigator Dearcop said, “I feel so lucky to come here every day. I have my dream job.”
