Ex-New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer has released some of his tax returns after taking heat for declining to disclose them as he runs for New York City comptroller after resigning amid a prostitution scandal.

Spitzer's campaign sent out his 1040 forms for last year and 2011 on Wednesday. A day earlier, the Democrat's campaign released his income and tax totals but said the forms were off-limits because they had private information about business partnerships.

Many city politicians voluntarily release their tax returns. Spitzer released his while he was governor and attorney general.

His current Democratic rival, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, released his returns Tuesday and urged Spitzer to do so.

The returns show about 60 percent of Spitzer's and his wife's multimillion-dollar income comes from real estate.
