Rochester, NY - Russ Oliver is an executive with One Communications in Massachusetts who has a severe craving for Dinosaur Barbecue. Oliver made a habit of feasting on ribs at one of Rochester's signature restaurants, until recently.
Oliver is flying to Rochester to meet with One Communications employees here less and less because of a new innovation some call "the board room of the future". It's a system the company calls "telepresence" and it uses four high-definition television monitors to allow employees in two different states to meet face-to-face.
"Unlike a traditional conference call, you can see people on the other end flinch," jokes Oliver. "You can see them sweat, you can see if they're paying attention."
Oliver believes the "telepresence" system will ultimately slash One Communication's travel budget by 75%.
