The pre-registration deadline is drawing near to sign up for the Jolly Roger Jog 5K and help support the Palmyra-Macedon Select Choir.
Sponsored by the Pal-Mac High School Select Choir Boosters, the race will be held on Saturday, Aug. 9 during Historic Palmyra’s Pirates of the Erie Canal, but all the proceeds go to help the 32-member choir pay for their travels and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
Throughout the past few years, the choir has performed in Boston, New York City, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, England, Scotland and Wales. In January, the group had the honor of performing at Carnegie Hall.
Choir Director Jill Davis said this the fourth year the race will be held. Parents in the Booster Club came up with the idea after deciding they needed another fundraiser. With some booster members also part of the pirate festivities, Davis said it seemed a natural fit. It was also a great way to get the community involved, she added.
“We wanted to add a fundraiser that was fun and included the community,” Davis said. “Four years ago, we started with 50 people in the race and it’s been growing ever since.”
Planning starts a year in advance, Davis said, to obtain proper permits, plan post-race food, contact business sponsors, decide on safety aspects (including a medical tent) and putting together a registration committee. Choir members help out too, setting up the water stop on the route and handing out water to race participants.
“And they cheer,” Davis said. “They cheer the whole race. Everyone there is in it to have a good time.”
Participants come from all over to walk or run in the 5K. The course, changed three years ago, is a scenic path, developed by the boosters, featuring portions of the canalway trail.
“The 4th Annual Jolly Roger 5K race is a very important fundraising event for us,” Booster member Stephanie Shelhamer said. “For one, it is a great way to kick off our year-long efforts to raise money for the Pal-Mac Select Choir. Two, it promotes a healthy lifestyle. And three, it gives us a chance to better know our community and our community to know us. It's really just a couple of hours of great exercise, meeting new people and just plain fun.”
The race will start at 9 a.m. on Aug. 9. Pre-register by Friday, July 18 and pay only $16. Registration on Aug. 3 will be $20 and starts at 7 a.m. in the parking lot at the Palmyra Marina on Division Street. Dogs are welcome with proof of rabies vaccination at the registration table. Parking is available in the municipal lots on Cuyler Street or at the Pal-Mac Primary School. The first 100 registrants will receive a Jolly Roger Jog T-shirt. Participant age groups are: Male/Female 14 and under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 plus.
