Controversy behind abortion bill

You may begin seeing some controversial billboards in your neighborhood. Most recently, one just went up on the corner of Blossom and Winton Roads.

13-year-old Dorothy Phelps said, "It's not something to be taken lightly. It's very serious."

Claire Maurer said, "If I wanted an abortion or something, I couldn't imagine not having my mom informed."

14-year-old Maurer just appeared in a commercial opposing former Governor Spitzer's abortion bill.

According to the memorandum, the bill updates New York's abortion laws and establishes a "fundamental, statutory right to privacy in making personal reproductive decisions." Meaning, every woman, regardless of age, can make her own decision when it comes to having an abortion.

"I had to show picture ID to get my 6-year-old's ears pierced which I think is reasonable, yet you can take my 14-year-old to have a surgical procedure without my consent or knowledge?"

You may start seeing these billboards around posted the city because activists say it's their new way of protesting the aborting bill.

Some doctors say this bill is being taken out of context.

Pro-life activist Maryjo Maurer said, "Unfortunately there are people who personally oppose abortion which is their right, but they're using this to try and twist it into something it's not."

Phelps says the bill is protecting women's rights and doesn't even address parental involvement. She says to read between the lines and see it through her eyes.

"The fact that the school nurse can't give my child a Tylenol but she can take her for an abortion, there's something very twisted about that."

Doctors say all this bill is doing is moving the statute from criminal law, to public health law. Aside from that they say there are no changes to the abortion process in the state of New York.
