Ann Savastano from the American Cancer Society said, “She's is amazing, I can't even begin to tell you the number of people she has inspired.” Last fall in an interview she said, “I don't even like the term survivor, I’m a warrior! Nothing against survivors, but to me, it's just battling every day.” First diagnosed in 1999, Singer's breast cancer returned two years later. Ann Savastano says that's the point when some survivors tone down their outreach work, but not Joni Singer. While beating back cancer a second time, singer ramped up her fundraising efforts and counseling sessions with other patients all with a sunny, vibrant sense of humor and empathy. Ann said, “She had this pink tiara, she was the queen of the treatment center, she had her doctors laughing, her nurses laughing. And that was important.” Now, Singer is once again fighting for her life as her cancer has returned a third time. And once again, Singer is determined to face the disease on her terms. In a way that promotes fundraising and understanding, a breast cancer survivor herself, Ann Savastano is confident a cure will one day be discovered. And when that day comes, she and thousands in our area will know it's partly because of the heroic life of Joni Singer. The Jefferson Awards were started by Jackie Kennedy Onassis. A local committee will select one of our ESL Jefferson award winners to go to the national convention in Washington, DC. After a valiant nine year battle with breast cancer, Joni Singer passed away on May 28, 2008. For service information, click here. Lipson Cancer Center Journey Home Hospice Temple B'rith Kodesh |
