Greece firefighters honored for dedicaton to safety

Greece, NY - After heart attacks, the leading cause of death for on-duty firefighters is failing to wear a seat belt on department vehicles during an emergency call.

Across the nation there are dozens of deaths every year after fatal accidents responding to emergencies.  That's why this year safety advocates started "The National Fire Service Seat Belt Pledge". And on Friday, the Greece Ridge Road Fire District will be recognized as the first department in the state to have 100% compliance with this new initiative.

"It's good for the community to see we take safety seriously," said Capt. James Cary.

"There are a lot of things we can't prevent on a fire scene. This is one thing we can control," added Alan Bubel, the district's public information officer.
