The ice and windstorms we saw this winter are still causing headaches for some homeowners. When it comes to weather-related repairs, experts say insurance companies are making it difficult.
They say there are certain things you need to know when dealing with your claims adjuster.
After three inspections, three adjustments, and countless headaches, Eric Windover says he finally got the money he deserved for his roof damage from January's windstorms.
"They're out for their own interest and they're going to want to pay you the least amount of money that makes you happy," says Windover.
Windover says if he didn't consult with local contractor Joe Del Vecchio, he would've been shorted thousands of dollars.
"I have enough faith in people that I would've just listened to the adjuster," says Windover.
"That's just human nature for people to trust people and to think no one's going to get one over in any way," says Del Vecchio.
Del Vecchio says homeowners need to protect themselves. He says many people don't even have a copy of their insurance policy at home.
"I recommend everyone get a copy of their policy and review it so when the situation comes about they're prepared," says Del Vecchio.
Del Vecchio also says windstorms aren't the only thing people need to be prepared for. He says Monroe County is always in the risk pool of a hailstorm as well which will also cause damage that a lot of policies cover.
So if you don't read the fine print in your policy, you may be at risk for a scam. A national report called 'The Insurance Hoax' talks about property insurers using secret tactics to cheat customers out of payments.
It also says many insurance companies pay only 30-60 percent of rebuilding costs.
Experts say if the language in your homeowner policy doesn't make sense and seems contradictory, don’t be afraid to question your insurance provider.
They also suggest getting a second opinion if you think you're entitled to more money.
