Former Buffalo Bills' quarterback Jim Kelly, in an exclusive interview with News 10 NBC Thursday, says people should not be hitting the panic button about the Bills. Kelly thinks the team will stay put. He was reacting to a column in the Buffalo News that says the Bills could be moved someday to L.A. or Toronto.
"I would do whatever it takes to make sure that team stays in Buffalo," said Kelly. "I can't see them going anywhere, whether it's Toronto or Los Angeles."
The team's announcement that it will play exhibition and regular season games in Toronto opened the door to speculation. Will the team someday be known as the Toronto Bills? The Buffalo News article says the most likely scenario is that a billionaire from Toronto or Los Angeles will make the highest bid for the team and move it. Owner Ralph Wilson is 89 years old. And it's unclear whether his family would eventually sell the team.
Kelly, a Hall of Famer, says he is interested in being part of a future ownership team. Said Kelly, "Yes, I do have people that I know that are very interested in being a part of this. My home is now in Buffalo New York." Rochester billionaire and Buffalo Sabres' owner Tom Golisano didn't respond to our phone call Thursday. But in an interview with WGR Radio in Buffalo back in February, he was asked about his interest in perhaps buying the Bills. "If the team becomes available I would like to do what I possibly can to help keep the team in the area. There's no question about it. I can't say I'm jumping up and down about wanting to be a Buffalo Bills football team owner," said Golisano. "Back to your point about the Buffalo Bills being for sale. Nobody has said they're for sale. And no one has indicated in any way, shape, form or manner that the team is going to be available."
Senator Chuck Schumer said it takes a vote of three-quarters of the NFL owners to approve a team to move, and he thinks he can prevent that. "There would be people who would be interested in keeping the Bills in Buffalo," said Sen. Charles Schumer, (D) New York. "Commissioner Roger Goodell and I are going to meet with Ralph Wilson, hopefully in the Rochester area during the summer training camp in an effort to do what ever we can to keep the Bills in Buffalo."
Jim Kelly said there's a long list of people who have contacted him, wanting to team up with him to buy the Bills. And he says he is passionate about keeping the team in Buffalo.
NFL commissioner Goodell grew up south of Buffalo.
