A robbery suspect is dead after being shot by an off-duty Rochester police officer Monday night. It happened around 9:30 p.m. outside the Elite Spa in Buckman's Plaza on West Ridge Road in Greece.
Police say two women were closing the spa when two men walked in. One of the men had a gun and started beating one of the women with it. That's when an off-duty Rochester Police Officer showed up. He was in the parking lot at the time. Police say the officer pulled out his own personal handgun and fired two shots, hitting the armed man. However, both men were able to get away. Greece Police were able to track down the unarmed suspect and arrested him. The suspect who was shot disappeared but later arrived at St. Mary's Hospital then was transferred to Strong Hospital where he died from his injuries. Both Greece and Rochester Police Officers say the off-duty officer acted appropriately given the situation. "Absolutely appropriate," said Greece Police Chief Merritt Rahn. "He used justifiable, deadly, physical force to thwart a robbery where the suspects had some guns."
"I think any time a police officer has to pull their weapon and use their weapon, it takes a lot of courage to do that, and yeah I would call him a hero," said Rochester Deputy Police Chief George Markert.
The woman who was beaten with the gun was conscious and transported to Strong Hospital for treatment.
