The Rochester mother accused of illegally sending her children into Greece schools tells News 10NBC she’d do it again.
Yolanda Miranda, also known as Yolanda Hill, is charged with grand larceny and lying on a legal document. Essentially, she put her children in Greece schools even though they lived in the city.
At the back door of Greece court this afternoon, Miranda said her actions were for the best of her kids and that she would so it again.
Miranda is charged with stealing education from Greece tax payers. She's facing a maximum of two and a third to seven years in prison. She's in jail on 25,000 bail even though the District Attorney’s office suggested she be allowed to go home.
Assistant District Attorney Matthew Dunham said, “I recommended release on her own recognizance however, that bail recommendation was based upon some information that may have not been completely accurate.”
As it turns out, there was a 2006 warrant for her arrest after she was sentenced to 26 weekends in jail for aggravated harassment.
Dunham said, “These charges haven't been elevated to sensationalize the case or to make an example, they are what they are because of the facts may fit those charges.”
City school superintendent Jean-Claude Brizard wants to talk to Miranda. He says her arrest was over the top. “It does send a message a chilling message to folks doing this, maybe that was the intent for the folks in the Greece Central School District but in my personal opinion I think that was a bit much.”
Greece schools won't comment specifically on the case but it's clear they think Miranda enrolled her children in Greece schools and lied about their residency. Miranda said they were living at their grandparent's home in Greece.
Greece schools say they face dozens of these cases every year but this is the first time they've ever gone to police and had someone arrested. They say it costs about $15,000 to teach each student and if that student's family isn't paying local school taxes, that's stealing.
