HF-L skiers head to Junior Olympics

The best high school skiers from all of the country will meet outside Lake Tahoe this weekend for the Junior Olympics. Six skiers from powerhouse Honeoye-Falls Lima will be there.

Legendary Honeoye-Falls Lima Coach Bernie Gardner is trying to prepare his kids for a mountainous task – competing at altitudes more than a mile high. The nation’s best high school skiers will head to the Lake Tahoe area.

Gardner said, “Mentally preparing for pain realizing you're going to hurt but so is everybody else.”

Able to adapt and succeed more than most, two of HF-L's best sectional champs Amanda Moreland and Steve Mangan are among six leaving tomorrow for the elite competition.

Mangan won states and both have competed at the Junior Olympics last year. Mangan won his sprint event he credits his coach for helping him prepare. He said, “He has a lot of knowledge just physically and mentally the aspects and how we can be more confident and train. He gets us to perform at a high level.”

Moreland hopes to improve on her performance from last year, an opportunity to compete at this level, regardless of the hurdles is her dream come true. “It's kind of every skiers goal to get to the junior nationals for skiing it's awesome to be going and I’m, looking forward to it.”
