Bausch & Lomb receives FDA approval for "pink eye" treatment

WHEC-TVThe Food and Drug Administration has approved a treatment for bacterial conjunctivitis – pink eye - developed by Bausch & Lomb.

Besivance is a new topical ophthalmic antibacterial, administered via sterile ophthalmic drops, that treats a wide range of eye pathogens including those that most commonly cause bacterial conjunctivitis.

In December 2008, an FDA Advisory Committee voted unanimously to recommend approval of Besivance. Its approval was based on a series of eight clinical trials.

It will be available by prescription in the second quarter 2009.
