Keeping your pool safe and fun

Having a pool is a great way to beat the summer heat and have a little fun. But with the fun of owning a pool comes responsibility for the safety of those who will be enjoying it.

Home pool drowning is the leading cause of death in children 5 and under. Most accidents that occur poolside happen when parents are not expecting their children to be in or around the pool. Maintaining a safe pool environment goes beyond preventing drowning to include keeping the water clean and balanced.

Preparedness and watchful supervision are key to maintaining the safety of loved ones this summer.

• Actively supervise children when they are in the pool area

• Restrict pool access when not in use
   o Enclose the area in a 4-foot fence
   o Remove ladders that provide access into the pool
   o Lock the pool area with a self-latching device

• Encourage weak swimmers and young children to wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket while in the pool

• Enroll children in swimming lessons

• Set rules about pool use and go over them regularly with children
   o No children allowed in the pool without active adult supervision
   o Nobody swims alone
   o No running or pushing
 o No diving (unless the pool meets the safety standards)

• Do not consume alcohol while using a pool or hot tub

• Test water regularly for pH and disinfectant levels

• Store chemicals out of the reach of children

• Have a First Aid Kit in the pool area in case an emergency should arise
