Nearly 32,000 people signed a petition for the West Webster firefighters to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. It was sent to the White House for approval this past January.

Senator Chuck Schumer has called on the Obama Administration to quickly respond. Senator Schumer's office says they checked on the status of the Medal of Freedom before Congress went out of session for the holiday. Right now, it is still up to President Obama. There is currently no timetable for when a decision might be made, but when Congress is back in session, Senator Schumer says he will continue to follow it.

A petition was also set up for an off-duty Greece Police officer injured during the tragedy. Officer Jon Ritter, who is retiring from the department Thursday, was on his way to work when he came upon the scene and was hit by shrapnel. Thousands of people signed the petition to award him the Medal of Freedom as well.
