Good for Rochester. That was what Benton Hess, the musical director at Eastman School of Music, said when he heard that Churchville’s Renee Fleming will sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl.
But before this performance and the four Grammy Awards, it all started for Renee in Rochester at the Eastman School of Music. Benton was her vocal coach in New York City and witnessed the transformation of what he calls a pretty voice to the now powerful one.
Renee will be the first opera singer to perform the Super Bowl national anthem. Benton says it will be like nothing the big game has heard before.
Benton Has said, “When the icons of that nature sing the national anthem, it becomes about that, but that’s not what the national anthem is. Renee can bring a certain gravitas. She is much beloved because she has never forgotten her background that she got here at Eastman.”
News10NBC’s Justin Granit will have much more with Benton. Stay tuned for his full story live from the Super Bowl next Friday.
