You see them almost everywhere you go, drive-thru restaurants. And many of you like the convenience they offer.

Monday, the village board in Honeoye Falls voted on an amendment, that would allow drive-thrus, or drive-up windows. There has been some pushback with this proposal.

The area in question, is zoned a general commercial district, but as you can see, there is a plaza full of stores and restaurants and banks with drive-thrus.  But Monday, the board voted to allow drive-thru restaurants.

Shari Stoler, a Village Trustee said, “I think it may come as no surprise I don't support this project, especially since we are working on our comprehensive plan. I would think we would want to have that in place before we change our zoning codes.”

Some people like trustee Shari Stotler, question if this is the right move for this quaint village of about 2,700. This issue has caused quite a bit of angst in the village.  Some people worry drive-thrus don’t fit the village's character, and don’t want it to become like victor where you will find drive-thru restaurants near the downtown area, along Main Street.

Ironically the village codes allow drive-thru restaurants in the historic downtown, but tonight the board determined there would be very little if any negative impact on traffic, pedestrian safety, the environment, or the character of the village if drive-thrus are allowed here in the commercial district.

Rick Milne, the Village of Honeoye Falls Mayor said, “I do believe our general commercial district is perfect for this type of business, an area that had an airport...three car dealerships, a dollar general, a plaza full of stores...it's a perfect area for this type of business.”

Jerry McMullen, a Honeoye Falls resident said, “I don’t mind the drive-thrus.”

Lynette Adams asked, “Do you think it will hurt the feel of, the village?”

McMullen: I don't think it will.

Dunkin Donuts which requested the variance is now one step closer to being able to build a drive-thru restaurant. The company just needs final approval from the planning board.
