A New York State Exposed report we featured months ago is prompting change and helping one local company in the process.

Back in February, we exposed a secret. We discovered a majority of book stores on state-run college campuses aren't selling any products made in New York State. Many of you said that's not right. Shortly after that report aired, a local SUNY college campus stepped up in a big way.

It our undercover investigation, our cameras went searching to find products with local ties sold in SUNY bookstores. We checked out SUNY Geneseo and The College at Brockport. There were a ton of products but few, if any, displaying the “Made in New York” tag. After more research, we found the same at nearly every other SUNY bookstore across the state.

Our story caused many of you and lawmakers to speak out.

State Assemblyman Harry Bronson said, “SUNY being an agent of the state whenever possible we should be buying quality products from manufacturers and from producers from the U.S. and New York State if possible.”

And it is possible. For instance, dozens of companies in Rochester could be used to print school logos but they're not getting the business.

Our original report brought you to Emerson Street Clothing in Rochester. They sell college apparel to several universities. But at that time, SUNY was not a big client…but fast forward to today and Monroe Community College, a SUNY campus, placed a large order.

Ginny Geer-Mentry of the MCC Association said, “We're working with several local vendors. Even if you're looking through our stores and saw the shirt was not manufactured in the USA all of the embroidery or silk screening is from local vendors.”

MCC giving back…helping local business…helping the community.

There are still a majority of SUNY schools not following MCC's lead, passing over local companies for ones with zero ties to New York State.
