Seven schools are "in need of improvement"

In need of improvement is the title given to seven local schools.

The federal government's No Child Left Behind program provides funding for schools and to make sure the money is not wasted, the schools must meet certain test scores.

Schools that meet the scores are deemed in good standing. 52 percent of Rochester City Schools are in good standing now, up from 36 percent last year. If a school's test scores are not high enough in any one category, the school is deemed in need of improvement.

Six Rochester city schools were added to this list today. School No. 5, School No. 16, School No. 17, School No. 28, Business Finance & Entrepreneurship at Edison and Skilled Trades at Edison were all cited for need of improvement in English language arts.

For the sixth year in a row, the Rochester City School District as a whole is listed as in need of improvement in English language arts.

Superintendent Jean-Claude Brizard says the district needs to work on mathematics as well, especially at the high school level.

Kids who go to schools that are in need of improvement can transfer or can receive free tutoring – which is paid for by the government. Once the school is off the list, funding for that extra tutoring goes away.
