The Canandaigua Academy Superintendent Donald Raw has confirmed to News 10NBC that a 17-year-old male student committed suicide Tuesday morning in school.
Canandaigua Police Chief Jon Welch has confirmed that male student who committed suicide was 17-year-old Thomas Kane.
Late Tuesday morning, police and emergency crews raced to Canandaigua Academy, and students were told over the intercom system that they were to remain in classes but were in no danger of harm.
School spokesman Andy Thomas says the gunshot was the result of a suicide attempt by a male student. Thomas says the shooting occurred in a bathroom near the gym. Many students were at lunch when the commotion began.
Canandaigua City Police Chief John Welch said, "We'll never know truly what his intentions were but he didn't carry it out so we can only infer that it may have crossed his mind but ultimatley he decided not to."
