Good Question: Are Rochester Cinemas behind the Times?

August 01, 2017 06:55 AM

A viewer who recently went to a Dolby AMC Cinema wants to know if Rochester will ever get one.

We're Rochester. Home to George Eastman, Kodak. Many argue, if it wasn't for the innovation born here, modern films would not be what they are today.

But is Rochester now behind the times when it comes to the movie watching experience?

"We definitely need to catch up with the times," said Kenny Jean.

Jean, who's from Rochester, said that after we showed him the experience at other cinemas around the U.S.

The Dolby AMC Prime Cinemas are dubbed as having the most powerful sound and vision technologies in the industry. The picture quality reportedly blows away anything in our cinemas.

The sound, literally moves and flows around the theatre. The seats, which have controls on them, vibrate and move with the scenes of the movies.

So when will Rochester get one of these? It's a question we ask a lot around here, like: Where's our IKEA? But we have a Costco now, and we're getting a Chick-fil-A.

Don't hold your breath. We reached out to AMC and there are no plans for an upgrade anywhere near Rochester. No plans in Albany or Buffalo either.

"In recent years, AMC Webster 12 has undergone a multimillion dollar renovation that included AMC signature recliners, however there are no immediate plans on the horizon to add a premium large format experience at AMC Webster 12," said Ryan Noonan, Spokesperson for AMC.

Okay, so no high tech cinema is coming soon, but are things really that bad here?

"I wouldn't say so," said Scott Pukos with the Little Theatre on East Avenue in Rochester.

The seats here don't move nor are they equipped with vibrating sounds, but still the experience is very unique.

"We like to do things that add to the movie experience. We have panel discussions following a film, which adds to the conversation. We do a lot of fun stuff. We had a mermaid movie and we served sushi or we had a movie about a cat and had a cat adoption night so that certainly adds to the experience,” Pukos said.

An experience some argue is even better than moving seats and brighter colors.

But if that technology is more of your thing, you'll have to travel pretty far for the Dolby AMC Prime experience. The nearest cinemas are in NYC and Philadelphia.

We did check and found a few cities, either the same size or smaller than Rochester, do have Dolby AMC Prime.
