I-Team 10 investigation: School fight caught on cell phone

City school brawlA brawl inside a Rochester high school is caught on video by a student using his cell phone. Now that student is in trouble for refusing to hand over his phone.

Sena Richards of Rochester says what happened inside her son's high school a couple weeks ago is enough to frighten any parent.

Her son, Kelyon, who did not want to be photographed for this story, captured the video of the fight on his cell phone.

Richards says she allowed her son to carry his phone to classes after he was repeatedly bullied, chased and threatened at school. She says its been going on since the beginning of the school year.

Fearing for his safety, she and her husband also take him to school in the morning and pick him up in the afternoon.

She says she came to I-Team 10 when administrators, school board members and local politicians ignored those fears.

Richards says the video is proof of what she's been saying and is indicative of what goes on in the Northeast/Northwest College Preparatory High School at the Frederick Douglass campus on a regular basis.

Richards said, “If I go there to tell them that something is going on, I think they should take it serious and the problem is they don't."

But now it is her son who is in trouble after administrators at the school demanded he turn over his phone. When he refused last week, she says her son was manhandled by several adults. “It takes five to six adults, grabbing and tugging on him, twisting his arms, pushing him against the wall trying to get the cell phone."

Kelyon was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct for cursing out the assistant principal.

I-Team 10 contacted the school district and a spokesperson said they have a no phone, no camera policy. Administrators demanded the phone after Kelyon was caught texting in class. The district says it appears from those texts that the boy was ratcheting up the aggression.

Richards said, “I try to pick the best school for my child, but I was wrong. They don't have these kids’ interests. They don't."

Her son has been an honor roll student and plans to attend the Air Force Academy when he graduates.

Ironically, Richards says she moved her son to the Northeast Prep because her son was assaulted and robbed of a necklace last school year while at East High School. She says despite making a police report about that incident, no one was ever charged.

Richards plans to transfer her son out of the Rochester City School District. She says she's not sure how she can go about doing that or where he will go, but says she's sure about one thing, and that's he will not be going back to Northeast.
