A former US Postal worker says his addiction to oxycodone led him to steal valuable packages at work and then pawn their contents.

Jeremy Lieberman of Greece pleaded guilty in federal court this morning to a felony count of theft by a government employee.

Lieberman worked at the Postal Service Distribution Center on Lyell Avenue handling packages. According to investigators, Lieberman stole several boxes destined for a Rochester diamond broker. Special agents used closed circuit surveillance cameras and say on several occasions they saw him chase specific boxes down the moving conveyor belt.

In court, Lieberman said he was prescribed oxycodone to manage pain for Dercum's Disease, a rare condition where tumors wrap around the nerves in the abdomen. Lieberman says he became addicted to the pain killers and stole diamonds, coins, gold and jewelry to get money to buy more. About the oxycodone, Lieberman told the judge, "It overtook me."

Between January and May of this year, Lieberman stole packages valued at $128,044. He could face up to 10 years in prison, but the recommended guidelines suggest a sentence of 24 to 30 months. He will also have to pay restitution. Lieberman will be sentenced in December.
