The mayor remains silent on the topic of what she told reporters earlier this week about a traffic stop on the Thruway. On Thursday, in a memo released by City Hall, her security director and uncle, Reggie Hill, admitted to being stopped by police, not once, but twice during a trip to Albany. That contradicts what Mayor Lovely Warren told I-Team 10 on Monday. I-Team’s Brett Davidsen tried to question the mayor Friday.
The story has really taken on a life of its own, primarily because of the mayor’s silence. On Friday, she ducked questions for a third straight day, this time after a public event in the city’s South Wedge.
Initially, Warren was being asked about the hiring of her uncle, Reggie Hill, to be her personal security detail. By Monday, the topic turned to Hill’s driving after reports surfaced that Hill had been pulled over for speeding on the Thruway while escorting the mayor to the governor’s State of the State Address. She acknowledged one traffic stop in the city issued Chevy Tahoe, but disputed reports that they were traveling 97 miles per hour.
On Thursday, with public pressure mounting, and with the mayor being dogged by additional questions, Hill acknowledged in a memo that he had been stopped twice that day, once on the way to Albany and again on the way home. As a result, Reggie Hill is being suspended for a week without pay. Why the mayor failed to disclose the second stop, we don’t know, because she refuses to answer any more questions. She did talk to the media on Monday.
In his memo, Hill took full responsibility and expressed regret for the embarrassment he had caused the mayor.
News10NBC reached out to several members of City Council Friday. None of who were available to talk or willing to comment about the mayor’s early miss-steps.
