BOSTON (AP) — Supporters of a conservative "free speech rally" that drew tens of thousands of counterprotesters say despite being outnumbered, the event was a success.
Rally keynote speaker Dr. Shiva Ayyadurai said Sunday that participants at Saturday's rally in Boston were there to discuss the "spectrum of American views."
Demonstrators protesting against racism and white supremacy descended upon Boston Common, dwarfing the rally's few dozen attendees and leading to what appeared to be an abrupt end of the event. But supporters say the event accomplished its purpose — to talk about the importance of free speech.
Rally organizers had publicly distanced themselves from the deadly white supremacy rally Aug. 12 in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Authorities reported 33 arrests were made at the events. Officials say about 40,000 people attended.
