Seven people from the Rochester area are accused of being involved in an illegal cockfighting ring in the Town of Frankfort in Herkimer County.
State Police investigated the illegal cockfighting operation for six months. Police say they seized approximately 55 game birds and over $68,000 in cash from a barn in Frankfort.
An adjacent barn was also searched, and police say they seized another 180 birds. All game birds were turned over to the Herkimer County Humane Society at the scene.
In total 42 people were arrested, six from Rochester including 54-year-old Marcelino Cintra, 61-year-old Eixton Flores, 40-year-old Jose Torres, 32-year-old Yordanis Plaza-Lopez, 42-year-old Eider Diaz, and 63-year-old Ramon Rivera. Angel Rivera, 52 of Fairport, was also arrested. They were all charged with engaging in animal fighting for amusement.
Plaza-Lopez was also charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance after police say he had over 100 grams of heroin. He was remanded to Herkimer County Jail on $100,000 cash/$200,000 bond bail.
