Baby doing well day after being born at Lyons Fire Department

July 16, 2017 11:16 PM

It started out as a typical Saturday for Scott Dwyer and his family – but it looked like his little one on the way had other plans in mind.

"She says 'I gotta push'. I said 'no don't push'. I said I'm not equipped for this. I'm not a medic," remembers Scott Dwyer, whose fiancée Sally was in labor.

Scott knew they wouldn't make it to the hospital – so he rushed to the Lyons fire department, asking for firefighters' help.

"I was like, hope she can wait!" says Jeff Rios, the Lyons Fire Chief.

"I get back to the truck and she says his head's sticking out," says Dwyer. "She says his head's sticking out. I said 'uh oh we're in trouble now'."

Paramedics soon arrived, including Patti Pierson:

"We did try to move her before realizing that the head was coming out," says Pierson, "so we tried to save the vehicle but that baby had other ideas."

"Next thing I know everybody starts running," says Dwyer.

"I get the car seat out of the backseat because she's in the backseat on all fours."

Firefighters, paramedics and Scott Dwyer – all anxious to get the baby out safely. Within minutes, a bouncing baby boy was born.

Patti Pierson, Paramedic: "You really didn't have time to think. We got here at 1 o clock and the baby was born at 1:02."

Jeff Rios, Lyons Fire Chief: "We were all doing high fives and shaking hands afterwards."

Patti Pierson, Paramedic: "We got mom situated, got her semi cleaned up. Got some IV, got some fluid with her and got ready to transport her to the hospital."

Scott, his fiancée, and their newborn son were brought to the Newark-Wayne community hospital where their son – Scott Junior -- was evaluated.

"Healthy baby boy's got a head full of hair," says Scott, "he's a good baby."

Scott Jr. weighs six pounds and eight ounces. The family will be discharged from the hospital on Monday.
