Teen seriously injured in Hopewell crash at intersection where jail deputy was killed

September 13, 2017 06:43 PM

Emergency crews responded to a serious crash at the same intersection where an Ontario County Jail deputy lost his life.

Deputies say the crash happened around 8:15 a.m. Wednesday in the Town of Hopewell near the intersection of County Road 46 and Smith Road. According to investigators, a car driven by 18-year-old Ian Park, of Union Springs, didn't stop at a sign on Smith Road and hit a vehicle with 73-year-old Dennis Hart and 71-year-old Susan Hart inside.

The impact of the crash sent the Harts' vehicle off the road and into a tree and flower bed at a home on County Road 46. Park's vehicle hit the front steps of the home.

Park was taken by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital with a head injury. The Harts were taken by ambulance to Clifton Springs Hospital for treatment as well.

Park is facing charges in the crash.

"We've been trying to get some sort of light or roundabout or something down here for years,” says Bob Wistner, who lives at the home next to the crash scene. “We've written the town supervisor, we've written to the state DOT, and this is what you get."

Deputy Josh Shaver died after a serious crash at the same intersection in May. Deputies say a motorist on Smith Road ran a stop sign and struck his vehicle. He was taken by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he later died.

"It was four months yesterday when Deputy Shaver’s accident occurred," said Lt. David Cirencione, Ontario County Sheriff’s Office. "A lot of us who responded to his accident, we’re out here this morning and it brings you right back to it."

The county says they have submitted a study on the intersection and are looking into making changes when the study is complete. Changes could include adding signals or a roundabout.

"People just don’t pay attention," Wistner told us.
