Flood gates opened to prevent Lake Ontario flooding

Flood gates are open to spill excess water from Lake Ontario into the Saint Lawrence River.

The gates at the Long Sault Dam in Massena opened on Monday morning.

Outflows from Lake Ontario are established by the International Lake Ontario and Saint Lawrence River Board. 

The decision is in response to higher than normal water levels and ice conditions on Lake Ontario.

High water levels on the lake caused historic flooding in the Rochester area last spring.
