The flu is now prevalent in New York State, the state declared Wednesday.
The announcement puts into effect a regulation. Health care workers who are not vaccinated against the flu are required to wear surgical or procedure masks in areas where patients are typically present.
During this flu season, New York has had more than 1,800 laboratory-confirmed cases of the flu throughout the state. There have also been 612 flu-related hospitalizations reported but no reports of pediatric deaths.
The state Department of Health says it's not too late to get the flu shot.
