Amazon is looking to build a second headquarters somewhere in America.
Now, like most other cities, Rochester officials are making their push to lure the new headquarters, which Amazon says would create 50,000 jobs, to the Rochester area.
News10NBC has created a hashtag to encourage Amazon to come to Rochester. Click here to tweet Amazon about #RocAmazon
We learned Monday the people in charge of bringing jobs to our area are already meeting to figure how out to get Amazon to build its second headquarters here.
News10NBC learned that the Greater Rochester Enterprise -- which does a lot of behind the scenes work -- and the economic development team with the county met Friday to talk about Amazon. They are putting together a team to come up with a proposal. So is the owner of the Rochester Tech Park. If Amazon came, it has a building that fits its specifications.
It's known as the Heidelberg Building. It's empty and it is for sale. "First of all the building itself is just a fabulous building," says Gates Town Supervisor Mark Assini.
Assini adds, "Right now, the ownership of the tech park is pulling together information for a potential submittal to Amazon."
Brean: "What would Amazon coming to our community mean for our community?"
Assini: "Jobs. Revenue."
Assini says Amazon would be the biggest project in the history of the county. But, Amazon has specific requirements for its new location. First, it needs a metro area with a million people. Population in Rochester and the Finger Lakes is more than a million.
Amazon also needs easy access to highways. The Heidelberg Building and the tech park have their own exits off 531.
Amazon also wants to be within 30 miles of an airport. The Rochester Tech Park is six miles from the airport.
Amazon wants an existing building with 500,000 square feet. The Heidelberg Building has that with room to spare.
Brean: "So it's fair to say the Rochester Tech Park is going to put a proposal together, send it to Amazon and say: 'Move your second headquarters here.'"
Assini: "I think that's the plan right now."
