Heavy snow starts falling in Rochester, Weather Channel visits

January 12, 2018 11:32 PM

The weather is so bad in Rochester that the Weather Channel has shown up.

Some areas could see more than foot of snow by Saturday night as a snow storm moves through. Making things worse, Rochester saw plenty of snow earlier in they day, before temps dropped, making travel conditions even slicker. As a result, local authorities are urging people to stay home or use caution if they must head out.

As the storm was moving in, business picked up at Mayer Paint and Hardware at Blossom and Winton roads. People came in for any and all things weather related. Even though it's January, people still needed items like shovels.

"Amazingly, you think everybody has a shovel," said Dennis McCarthy, general manager. "They always need to be replaced every few years too so we always have a steady flow of people wanting to upgrade to a newer shovel -- one that is better than the old one."

At Wegmans, it was milk, eggs and bread -- items the manager told me fly off the shelf when a big storm is predicted. The parking lot looked like the traffic at a big sporting event. Alexa Lantiere, of Rochester, didn't want to stop here, but got a call from her sister asking her to get some food before coming home.

"I had looked up how to get here because I was coming a different way and every way to get here was really red and orange," said Lantiere. "Like, everybody was going, so I was like, 'Okay.' I was prepared, but actually, I'm impressed I got in and out pretty quick."

The important thing for many shoppers: Get food for dinner Friday and possibly Saturday -- that's what Dakota Nesbitt and his mom did.

Nesbitt says, "Freezer food, so we can heat it up and we can warm things to eat and drinks to heat up, regular drinks and snacks."

And while Rochester residents were flocking to the store, the Weather Channel made a visit. Veteran reporter Mike Seidel was covering the storm live in downtown Rochester Friday evening as the heavy snow started to come down.
