Holley Fire Department sued over Squirrel Slam

February 28, 2017 06:36 AM

The Holley Fire Department is facing some heat this morning for an annual squirrel hunting event.

According to the Orleans Hub, the department is being urged to hire a lawyer after being sued for sponsoring the Squirrel Slam. The lawsuit, brought by Lauren Sheive of Williamson, claims the mass killing of the squirrels can lead to an "environmental impact." Sheive is being represented by a law firm in New York City.

The president of the fire department argues the hunt doesn't wipe out squirrels and is spread over several counties. He says he's disappointed the department will have to spend money on an attorney.

This past Saturday, the fire department was not part of the squirrel slam at the Elks Lodge in Brockport.
