The state Senate has approved a bill that would allow interest on late rebate checks.
Last week, when asked during a hearing with lawmakers if homeowners still waiting on a STAR rebate check deserved interest, the executive deputy commissioner for the state Department of Taxation and Finance said: "The statute says September 15 or as soon thereafter as practical and we do not have the authority to pay interest."
The checks were supposed to go out in September, but many are still waiting or received checks with the wrong amount of money.
The bill would allow eligible homeowners who are owed money by the state after last year's changes to the STAR program to be paid interest each day their check is late.
The bill now goes to the Assembly.
