News or Noise: 911 calls from your iPhone

December 07, 2017 12:03 AM

You may have seen social media posts claiming you can call 911 from your iPhone,
without anyone knowing, by just pressing one button several times.

The post reads that if you're ever in an unsafe situation and need to discreetly call the police, hit your iPhone's lock button on the side five times and you'll get this screen.

We tried it on an iPhone and it worked.

According to Apple's website, if you have an iPhone 7 or earlier model, rapidly press the lock button five times and an emergency SOS slider will appear.  You can then drag that slider to call for help.

If you have an iPhone X, 8, or 8 Plus, all you have to do is hold the side button and one of the volume buttons until the emergency SOS slider appears.

You can also continue to hold down the side button and volume button and a countdown will begin and an alert sounds. After the countdown, your iPhone automatically calls emergency services.

However, it's important to note: only users running iOS 11 on their iPhones can access the emergency SOS option. If you're using an iPhone older than a 5s, or have not yet upgraded to iOS 11, this emergency feature will not work.

When it comes to News or Noise, this post is 50/50.
