NYS Exposed Special: Roland Williams: Unbreakable Belief

September 10, 2015 07:28 PM

Unbreakable belief: That's what NFL great and Super Bowl Champion Roland Williams says helped him persevere while growing up on some rough streets in Rochester.

His narrative isn't unlike many of the stories children in the City of Rochester are dealing with today even though he graduated from East High -- some 21 years ago.

Williams grew up in a neighborhood where he says crime was common. We spoke with him near his childhood home, a short walk away from the shooting last month outside a Boys and Girls Club where three young men died and four others were wounded. Williams tells me growing up on tough streets led him to create his Champion Academy.

"Until they know that there's someone who has unconditional love for them -- who loves them, who wants to support them -- until there's someone in life to give strategic accountability, you can't rush them and bust their chops every single day," says Williams. "You got to have somebody that knows when to push, when to pull, you know you got to have someone that actually cares about you."

In our New York State Exposed Special, we looked at Williams' life and his work with the Champion Academy. Hit play to see the full special.
