Peeling New York license plates are still on the roads at least three years after the problem started.
The number of peeling plates continues to grow. WNYT asked the Department of Motor Vehicles why this is still happening. DMV officials say the investigation is ongoing and they will not comment until it's complete.
Back when the problem started, the DMV did a replacement program. You’re given new ones free of charge, but now even the new ones are peeling.
“Why are we making a defective product after we've already made a defective product,” says Ivy Eckler, Schenectady.
Under the law, officers must be able to clearly read your license plate. Troopers can ticket you for a violation known as license plate visibility obstruction.
