Neighbors in Pittsford woke up to a shocking crater on their block on Saturday morning.
The gigantic sinkhole formed along Carriage Court near Concord Drive after a major water main break. Monroe County Water Authority crews have been working to fill the six foot deep hole since 8:30 am Saturday. As of 6 pm, the sinkhole has been fixed.
Neighbors tell News10NBC when they woke up Saturday, the neighborhood looked like a lake.
The sinkhole formed across from Bob Steele’s home.
“This is unbelievable. This is unbelievable. What water can do… water everywhere. It was bubbling, it was bubbling all up.”
The crater was so massive, so deep that you can fit at least five cars in it.
Making matters worse was the mud everywhere caused by a water main break.
“With all of the water and everything came all the dirt and I had to get out this morning and it was six inches of muck and mud and everything deep all through here. It was worse than snow.”
At least half a dozen water authority crews worked round the clock to repair the water main break. One truck after another brought loads of gravel to fill in the hole.
David Wilson, like many of his neighbors, was without water for only less than an hour or so. Although the sinkhole caught many off guard, right now he’s just grateful.
“When everybody looked out their windows I think we’re quite astonished by the size of the hole… Everybody’s just thankful nobody was injured, nobody drove into it, and the town of course, the county is taking care of it in quick order and we’re grateful for that.”
The executive director of Monroe County Water Authority told News10NBC that street sweepers will be brought in to help clean up the area.
