Police are trying to determine why an 88-year-old man would try to kill his wife of 60 years with a hammer.

Authorities say Martin Turkiewicz of Cheektowaga was charged with attempted murder after hitting his wife in the head with a hammer. The incident happened at a suburban Buffalo nursing home.

According to investigators, Turkiewicz told investigators it was an act of compassion. Investigators say Turkiewicz told them he wanted to end her life because he felt sorry for her.

The victim, 86-year-old Rita Turkiewicz, is still in the hospital.  Prosecutors say they are continuing to look for another motive.

"We're trying to find out the last couple of hours, the last couple of days of these two people’s lives, who they were with, what they were saying,"said John Flynn, Erie County District Attorney.

Turkiewicz remains behind bars. He is due back in court on Wednesday.
