February 12, 2018 07:20 PM

Rochester's oldest and most popular sports team will remain in the Flower City, as the Rochester Red Wings and Monroe County have signed a lease deal to keep the team at Frontier Field for at least another decade.

Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo and Rochester Red Wings President/CEO/COO Naomi Silver announced the deal at a joint press conference at Frontier Field on Monday. The lease will run from April 1, 2018 to April 1, 2028 with a mutual option to extend it another ten years to 2038.

The lease agreement comes after weeks and months of uncertainty over the future of the Red Wings in Rochester, and just a few days after International League President Randy Mobley announced a March 1 deadline for a deal. Had the deadline not been met, the Red Wings would have played at least some of their 2018 home games in another city.

Under the new deal, Rochester Community Baseball will provide Monroe County $100,000 a year in rent. Monroe County will make continuous capital improvements to Frontier Field in accordance with the International League's standards to ensure that it remains one of the premier stadium in the league.

The lease needs to be officially reviewed and approved by the Monroe County Legislature. According to Dinolfo, it will be taken up as a Matter of Necessity at the Legislature's regularly scheduled February meeting on Tuesday night.

The Red Wings will begin the 2018 season in Frontier Field on April 6 at 6:05 p.m. against Buffalo. According to Silver, it will be designated "Community Appreciation Day".

This is breaking news and we will have more details as they become available.
