Arctic blast expected to hit Rochester next week

November 29, 2017 11:30 PM

Some people may be asking how we look so far ahead in our forecast. There are a lot of factors but in this specific instance it has a lot to do with the Jet Stream and specifically where it is over East Asia on the other side of the world. It’s rather strong here thanks to a deep cold air mass sitting over Siberia where temperatures have been diving to minus 20 to minus 30 at times!  This cold air interacts with warm tropical air to the south and creates our potent Jet stream over Eastern Asia, up to 200mph in some areas.

Think of the Jet stream like a freight train though, it’s all connected around the world. And much like a train if the back car suddenly picked up in pace and slammed in to the car ahead of it what would happen? The cars would slide off the track and buckle. That is the case here, with the jet stream over the western Pacific speeding up we are seeing a ridging effect over the Hulf of Alaska, this is tapping in to that bitterly cold arctic air to then north and forcing it to plunge south over the eastern USA and by next week also here in to Rochester.

But that is just one way we can figure out a forecast ten days in advance, and also how the weather all the way on the other side of the world has an impact on us here at home.
