Congresswoman Louise Slaughter announced on Friday that RIT's National Technical Institute for the Deaf has received a million dollar federal award from the National Institute of Health.
The five-year award will be used to develop a scientist-in-training program for deaf and hard-of-hearing undergraduates at the school.
The funding comes from the Research Initiative for Science Enhancement program, or RISE, which aims to increase the number of underrepresented students in the biomedical and behavioral sciences. NTID's program will be the first to specifically serve deaf and heard-of-hearing students, according to a press release.
