The fate of sports betting in New York is in the hands of the U.S. Supreme Court, but state lawmakers aren't just sitting back and waiting on their decision.
On Tuesday, the State Senate Committee on Gaming passed a bill that would allow for sports betting at all New York State casinos. It would even allow them to take bets online.
The bill's sponsor said that there's a lot to gain for state taxpayers if the U.S. Supreme Court lifts the federal ban on sports betting, and said that New York needs to be ready.
"It's estimated that there's over $200 billion in illegal gambling going on in sports betting," said Assemblyman John Bonacic, a Republican from New York's 42nd District said. "So we're trying to put legislation in place that if that ban is removed, we can move quickly."
Justices are expected to make a decision in the coming months.
News10NBC wanted to know why state lawmakers are acting with such urgency.
The bill's sponsor breaks down the reasoning and explains what New Yorkers stand to gain in New York State Exposed on News10NBC at 11.
