More than a thousand STAR rebate checks mailed out last year haven't been cashed, according to a Syracuse.com report.
In 2016, the state switched from up-front exemptions on tax bills to mailing out checks to new homeowners. Most checks are worth about $750.
The New York Tax Department says the checks could have been mistaken for junk mail, thrown in the trash or just lost. The state did send out follow-up letters in July, the report says. And if the checks aren't cashed by March 2018, the money will be forwarded to the comptroller's unclaimed funds division -- which means a slightly lengthier process to get your cash.
If you are a homeowner, and you think you missed your check, you can check with the tax department by calling (518)457-2036.
